Are multivitamin supplements always good for you and can they replace fruit?

Supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and should only be used when needed and for limited periods of time.

Antioxidants, vitamins, micronutrients… we have learned from the internet, TV and magazines how much these substances are good for your health. Since they are available in supplements, freely purchasable at the supermarket or pharmacy, why bother eating foods in particular fruit and vegetables, which naturally contain them, every day and several times a day?
To date, there is no scientific evidence to establish with certainty that, in the absence of specific deficiencies diagnosed by the doctor, the intake of vitamins in the form of supplements has a beneficial effect for the body and is to be preferred over the intake of vitamins through a balanced diet. In particular, multivitamin supplements have not been clearly shown to decrease the risk of cognitive impairment or developing cardiovascular disease or cancer.
