Can a meal be replaced with energy bars and food supplements?
No product should replace a complete meal, except for limited periods and within a controlled low-calorie diet. The mix of vitamins and micronutrients present in the replacement meals does not reproduce on health all the effects of a healthy and balanced diet.
The meal replacement should be included in a healthy low-calorie diet, depending on the goal set. There are more than 4500 options on the market, including supplements, bars and drinks, but none of these represent a valid substitute in a healthy and balanced diet. They can certainly boast good nutritional properties by composition, and be used for other purposes, but they hardly have the completeness of a balanced and healthy meal.
Foods are very complex from a nutritional point of view to be reproduced in the laboratory and it is impossible to insert all the substances contained in them in a tablet, tablet or solution. Supplements are useful in case of increased need for certain nutrients, such as folic acid in pregnancy, in case of heavy menstrual flows for iron or in certain conditions, such as osteoporosis, for vitamin D, or for vitamin B12. in the vegetarian diet. However, it should be remembered that supplements can give interactions with some drugs and that the excess of certain nutrients, if the supplements are not used in the manner indicated on the label, could have negative effects on health.
For this reason it is recommended to carefully evaluate the intake of supplements, consulting your doctor, and to always read the label in which the contents of the package are described in detail.
