Does the menstrual cycle synchronize between women who live in close contact?

It is erroneously thought that a long coexistence between women in the same family, home or workplace, can make the arrival of menstruation coincide on the same days.

It is often said that women who work or live together create a synchronized rhythm of the menstrual cycle. This false belief probably stems from a misinterpretation of a study on menstrual cycles. The research, conducted in the 1970s and published in the journalNature, had analyzed a small sample of young women who lived together in the same dormitory. The "McClintock phenomenon", named after the psychologist who had published the results of the study, was a great success, probably also thanks to the historical moment of affirmation of feminism and the deep feeling of alliance that tied women at that time. The few subsequent studies that confirmed the theory of menstrual synchronism, they were all on a small scale, therefore not statistically significant and were mostly based on the random approach of cycles due to their different duration.
The belief, still current, has been disproved by various scientific studies carried out over longer periods and on thousands of women (therefore statistically more relevant), who have excluded this influence. These researches have shown that the menstrual cycle of women cannot synchronize and that this phenomenon can eventually be traced back to simple coincidences.
